I think David raises an important issue. This is just magnified by the fact that because of firewalls and ISP issues, few players can host, so if you want to play you are often subject to the whims of hosts.

It is right to call out rude behavior as inappropriate here on this forum. Maybe we can't ban, but at least we can agree that it is BAD BEHAVIOR at best and at worst unethical. The easy solution as David suggests is for the host to advertise correctly what kind of game he is hosting. But I also like the precaution presented by Tulip, ask if it's 3P or 4P. But with very few games being hosted these days, I think many players are reluctant to make waves.

I personally can't believe the host David mentions would force him to quit rather than remake the game. Such rudenss... sometimes I can't believe how inconsiderate people are. We should most definitely hammer such folks with ghastly PAR.

This kind of behaviour is not the way it should be, but it is not subject for a ban as this is not cheating. This attitude will result in bad PAR.

The way to attack these situations is as follows:
A. Don't press ready until you are 100% sure that the host plays full houses by asking that explicitly (eg. "3p or 4p?"). If you don't receive a satisfying answer then leave the game.
B. Only play games with hosts you trust.
C. Use PAR and the web-site to look at the profile of the host. On the player page on the web you can see what kind of games the host prefers.
D. Host your games .
_________________
"Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel"

I've just had another bad experience with a terrible host. This has happened before and been discussed before but I just wanted to reiterate...

If you are hosting a 4p map and want to play with 3, or a 5p map with 4, etc, please make this clear, either in the game name or to people in the connector before the game starts. There are many people who want to play a map as it should be, i.e. properly balanced. If you want to mess with that, fine, but at least say so.

In order to counter this, I've made a point of not readying until all the players are present. That way, if the host wants less players, he will have to speak up. However, this is not foolproof. What has just happened (again) is this:

Player 4 joins and readies, so I ready, then the host boots the newly joined player and immediately starts the game, leaving me in a game that I did not sign up for. I then ask politely for the game to be restarted, but the host says no but you can quit. I make my argument, the host remains belligerent. So I now have three options - play a game I don't want to play, take a quit, or do nothing and get reported for passive quitting.

This is no fun, and bad hosting, plain and simple. I don't play this game to be threatened or abused, and hosts like that really get my goat. I hate being made to feel like I've done something wrong, when the host is clearly at fault. Has anyone else had similar issues? And what would be the correct ruling on the above case, if a passive quit report was posted? Can I suggest a host ban?
S3D/C3D development has been going on for years. Has anyone noticed if the start of the cycle is likely to happen more in winter months when there's less to do outside?

I know the last development cycle started this summer but was cut short by a vacation. Unfortunately, ethereal never returned to continue developing C3D. And over 100 people signed up for alpha testing...
Hi there,

A friend of mine just created an account just now and he has a problem.
He created a ladder account, is able to join games but when it is his turn to place a village, he can see the dots, but cant click on them and make a village. He can click himself silly but nothing reacts

We have tested it on 3 servers, no succes, several reboots/restarts no succes

anyone know what the problem might be?
Subject: Linksys router may never work
Posted: Wed Oct 08, 2008 11:23 pm (GMT -6)

So I've gone through every avenue of attempting to host a game, including all the recommendations on this thread. My final step was to talk to customer support for my Linksys WRT54GS router for over an hour attempting to resolve the issue. After all of this, tech support went through all of their remedies, and then he went one step further and read the Sea3d forum, and we were unable to fix it.

When I bypass the router connecting directly to the cable modem, I am able to host with no problems.

I have a theory that Sea3d is not compatible with this Linksys router (though I'm not an expert). I've thrown in the towel.
This thread may be degenerating into needless statements that have little to do with the original question. Thank you Macho John for the most intelligent answer to the posed question (though his was not the only one).

If this topic interests you, I'd suggest reading the initial post and then a response such as Macho John's, or making your own in order to usefully contribute to this thread. If your goal is to make a patronizing remark, instead, read this portion of my initial post:

I've got Vista with the same problem, but I found a work-around for my computer. I run my copy on an Asus laptop. I still can't host games, so I only join network games.

Sometimes joining a game makes the sea3d screen not show up though I'm clearly in the game. I think the above suggestion is right that it works more consistently if you close or minimize all other applications first.

So here's my work-around if the screen does not show up. I unplug the power on my laptop, drop it into minimum power performance, and voila, the screen shows up. I can then plug it back in and the screen stays.

I think that the power minimization drops everything into the background that might otherwise get in the way. Hopefully someone can root out the exact cause of the problem with my anecdote and a few others.
Every open window has to be minimized (or better closed)before you click start game. Also whatch if the grey screen of SEA3D (on background) is showing up. IF not.. quit and retry.. then click start game.

I got the idea that the whole problem has to do with other open, active windows.

if anyone is interested i will post screenshots of the wrong and good screen,.

It seems that some programs have to be completely shut down. Minimizing works for web browser but for example Windows Media Player and MSN messenger seems to cause problems even they're minimized.
This is a known problem (search for it in this forum).
You game will be deleted after the nightly regen.
After the game has been deleted on the site you can repost by selecting that game in the game list of your sea3d program and by pressing the report button. After the next nightly regen all the ratings will be corrected.
_________________
"Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel"

Hi,

I've just played with MYSELF and with PrinceGeorge. The results of our game are blended with the ones from another game (that had Bart Simpson, Eyes Up and HappyGilmore as players). My rating after this game is the same it was before the game, so it didn's counted... In tha game chart, our ratings are blank...

Can you fix what happened?

Thanks,

there could be any number of reasons. Depending on which country you live in, a previous player may have gotten IP banned, and your work uses the same IP address. I suggest that you send a private message to 'Mr. Bob', one of the moderators here, to straighten this out for you. I'm having hosting issues. Simply put, im trying to run the game from behind my colleges server, i know my external and internal ip address, th eonly problem is port forwarding. I cant access the router settings, so how do i find an open port to host my Sea3D games, or how do i manually set up a port forward that doesnt require me logging in to the server configuration?
